This is the first of nine books that writes of mostly European Army personnel beginning in Africa 1943. Although the principal characters are a composite of the various economic and cultural classes of the various combatants, they are a good cross section and almost anyone with a father, grandfather, uncle or brother who served during WWII or Korea will recognize them in one of the men or women written about. Although the first book is entitled The Lieutenants, there are actually to ranks profiled- the majors/Colonels and Generals who served as commanders and the 2d and 1st "Johns" Lieutenants that carry through the subsequent books as they ascend the promotions in the military. As always, Mr. Griffin writes a superb characterization and the people are easily created in the mind of the reader. What I particularly liked about this set of stories included within the first volume so much information, especially about the connections between the continuing cast and how a subset of society tends to "know" who belongs and who doesn't about all the continuing cast, without being too much information, both setting everyone up for subsequent books but also allowed for the small"OMG" details to be added through each developing chapter that it never read dull. As always, Mr. Griffin's attention to accurate and historical detail makes these works a fountain of information. We meet the "long grey line" and West Point Protection Assn, the rich kid from Long Island, the street wise sergeant, the impotent chairwarmer, the quintessential warrior and a host of real personalities that transcend language or country of origin and relate exclusively to the human race. It sets about the beginnings of the OSS/CIA and changes military mindset from soldiers & civilians and Geneva Conventions to Political warfare, civilian enemies, propaganda, subversion and no innocents: from the soldiers who lined up and fired across open fields at each other to 13 year old girls with C4 strapped to their waists on suicide missions in open marketplaces. I have to admit that I have read this series before and enjoyed it immensely, so I tried it again on my . This is the first book of the series and it continues on for several more; the first few are excellent, but the series does run out of steam towards the end. In this book, the main characters are identified and it is interesting how much of this book is spent on each one. One of the most important characters, Craig Lowell, doesn't come in until about halfway through the book, because a lot of the book was on developing the other characters. This is fine, though, because it gives you time to absorb the nuances of each character and thus they appear very real in your mind. I read this book about twenty years ago and was surprised how much I remembered - the characters are that memorable.
W.E.B. Griffin goes into great detail about a lot of things and that is a mixed blessing. Details about the type of weapons used in WWII and the people who were trained to use them helps you to follow why they do things. Details about the fussy parties and such you can skim. What is missed is the treatment of the inevitable battles in some depth. What is covered is how the individuals act around a battle and in the aftermath. Griffin takes delight in introducing the non-combat types who focus only on things like whether someone's uniform is perfect or who is driving too fast or other such pettiness while a war is going on. The most interesting part of the book is the focus on short stories about individuals which are given a lot of depth. Once you learn of a character and then you see the character react to circumstances, you understand why this person did so. Memorable characters is a hallmark of this series and events that happen early on reappear throughout the series. Not to give away any major plot points, but I did enjoy the special medal that was awarded to Lt. Lowell by the Greek government. It was huge and appeared to "outrank" other officers at events where medals and decorations were required - a blatant attempt to show off awards by organizers who were then shown up by this huge award to a lowly lieutenant.
Griffin also repeats certain aspects of individuals, but that is to be expected in a series like this where some readers might start in mid-series. And, while this is a great read, it gets better a couple of books later when Craig Lowell checks out an airplane or loads tanks onto trains. Such vignettes are wonderful to read and really are memorable; one has to imagine that Griffin must have heard these tales from others as they are simply too amusing and too detailed to have come from his memory. If I am wrong here, then Griffin is a genius of story telling. Please pick up this book and enjoy it.
