Gram lives in the long shadow cast by his father, the late-hero, Dorian Thornbear. Struggling to find his place in a world where politics and wizardry appear to have replaced the need for men of might and main, he must make his own mark. Trapped within the seemingly safe confines of Castle Cameron, Gram faces both love and tragedy. His choices will define not only himself, but serve to remind others of his family’s legacy, and the reason only a fool threatens those a Thornbear protects.

Thornbear Champions of the Dawning Dragons Book 1 eBook MIchael G Manning

I have come to love this world created by Michael Manning and the characters in it. Gram Thornbear (Dorian Thornbear's son) is no exception. He is well-characterized and his actions are definitely those of a teenager trying to find his path in life. I gave this four stars because parts of the plot were a little too predictable based on the previous books I've read, and also the language was a little more coarse than I enjoy.

Gram Thornbear is a teenager with the normal insecurities. He is exceptional in his physical prowess and ability to learn combat. This is easily believable considering his father. His best friend is Matthew (son of Mordecai Illenial) and his mother is Rose Thornbear (formerly Rose Hightower.) A young woman comes to be fostered at the castle and she and Gram become entwined in a tale of romance, love, and deception. The story is well told, I didn't want to put it down until I completed it. Aside from the ill-fated romance, it is a story of friendship and loyalty, of two young men who are best friends and both remarkable in their own way.

I would definitely recommend this book to other readers of fantasy.

Thornbear Champions of the Dawning Dragons Book 1 eBook MIchael G Manning Reviews

I didn't enjoy this book as much as i have the others. It felt like an uncertain romance. It didnt have the character development Ive enjoyed in all the books. I still recommend it as essential to read. It contains info we need to continue and it is still enjoyable. I do not regret buying and reading this installment.
I thought that the story had ended but now it begins again, better than before. Focusing on Gram Thornbear, the son of Dorian, it tells a story of love, courage, and coming of age. The fight scenes are very detailed and realistic, with a lot of tension and drama. The story is very well crafted and all the characters are memorable and dear through repeated stories in previous books. There is a new character, Alyssa. Her story is remarkable and doubtless will become part of a new series. If you liked Michael Manning's previous books, you will love this one.
Michael is an amazing author and I literally can't wait for the nexts books to come out. As a longtime fantasy reader who was an obsessed Harry Potter fan and then Eragon, I can honestly say this is my favorite author for sure. If you like authors like him, check out Terry Mancour, who writes my SECOND favorite series. This is the only series that goes beyond 7 or so books that I think it only gets better and not repetitive. Worth every second of reading(and re reading)
I give few ratings when compared to the number of books I read. Mostly because I don't write reviews very well. But, I enjoyed this book so much that I have made an exception. My opinion really means nothing unless your tastes align with mine. I suggest you look at my other reviews for that determination.
The book is well written and the characters are well developed also. I have read Manning's other series and I feel this one is his best so far. It has some course language; but not overly so. The trend today for many authors is too dedicate chapters to individual characters and them pull them together at the end of the book. While this book focuses on Gram Thombear and coming of age, their are plenty of supporting characters and he develops them and intertwines them to add variety to the story.
The pace, while certainly not fast, moves the story steadily forward. The tell for me that I was really enjoying the book was that I did not find myself skipping over sections; which is something I found myself doing with the last few books I read.
There are good likable characters. The central character is strong, but far from perfect. And while Gram possess some abilities that might be considered magical, I don't see Manning making Gram into an all powerful being as he did with Mordecai in the Mage Born series.
The headline pretty much says it. I was engrossed in this book almost right from the beginning. The main character Gram certainly has his flaws, as do those around him. However, rather than making him some sort of anti-hero who you end up disliking by the end of the book, the author made him someone you actually like and can identify with. Thankfully, this is common throughout the entire book, bucking the trend in modern fantasy where supposedly good=dark and good=unlikable characters. If you are looking for a book that has a refreshing approach to high fantasy, I strongly suggest taking a look. I read the entire thing in a day, and it is rare these days for me to find a book that I simply cannot put down. Prior to reading this, I started two other fantasy books that I just quit reading after about 35% of the book. This is not such a book.

If I had to make one criticism, it would be that the author, on occasion, glosses over things that are quite difficult, almost as if he expects the reader to already get what he is talking about. There are two possible reasons for this that I can see 1) he is writing in a world that he has already spent considerable time building in a previous series (this is the first book of his that I have read, so this is speculation); and 2) he is trying to avoid the all to common "information dump" that plagues fantasy writing.

Strong book. I look forward to the next installment in the series.
Truly encompasses all the greatest things we, as fans, have come to love about the books of MGM. Love, intrigue, despair, anguish, heartache...and just when you feel like screaming "NOOOOOO!!!" a ray of hope shines like a single candle in the darkness. I have truly enjoyed reading about all of these characters from the Blacksmith's Son through this latest work....I have laughed, cried and whined "It's not faaaaaiiirr....." more times than I can count and gotten more strange looks from my wife and perfect strangers when I chuckle or get teary eyed while reading. That, to me, is the sign of a great book; and it happened again when I read this one.
