In October 2013, I travelled to Barolo, Italy in pursuit of the Nebbiolo grape ripening on the vine. Jason Hunter is an engaging writer crisp and witty with the ability to convey tons of information succinctly and economically. For example, in the section "What is Barolo?" Jason presents a mini tour-de-force on the name "Barolo" in the 1st paragraph, and then proceeds to offer a wonderful summation of the region, culture and food, with wine as the informing passion. Jason makes intelligible the differences between topography and geology, clarifying their significance to the creation of Bartolo's estate wines. He then traces the history and evolution of wine production from traditional practices to a modern approach which embraces a "slow wine" philosophy "about the strong connections between glass, planet, people and culture." The photography presents a breathtaking tour of the region, and the text reduces the formidable science of enology to clear, understandable terms for a layman. Jason Hunter's scholarship, friendly narrative and vivid descriptions of each wine leave the reader wanting to continue the exploration and taste, taste, taste, e.g. Barolo Cerequio - "creamy and broad with aromas of cherries, plums, dried rose, minerals and spice."
